P6 Activity Code Cleanup Utility

Typically, as a company grows the number of projects that it is managing also grows. Initially these are dealt with as stand-alone projects and the need to enforce standard activity codes is not recognized since data from projects can be combined manually for reporting purposes. However, with continued growth this becomes onerous and the company must move to an enterprise wide management system. The diverse, non-standard coding is now a huge problem, a problem that is compounded when schedules are imported from third parties.

Primavera P6 alllows to move the code from Project level to EPS to Global. Unfortunately Primavera doesn't have the functionality to move the code from Global to Project level.

The P6 Activity Code Cleanup Utility was built for our clients who had activity codes that needed to be moved from Global level of P6 to Project and wanted to avoid tedious and time consuming data entry efforts.  This application was stated to have saved a recent client 6 man-months of data cleanup which was completed in only 8 hours with Emerald’s utility. This was particularly important since the client was going into a Shutdown in less than 6 weeks.

We are going to see how Activity Code Rolldown application works in Primavera P6. The application will first look which projects and baselines the specific Global Activity Code is assigned, then will create identical complete hirarchy copy of the activity code and the code values at the Project Level and baselines, and finally create identical code values assignments to activities.

 

In our example we first created two Global Activity Codes:

Serge-T1

Serge-T2

 

To start using the application you need to have an API licence configured for the specific Primavea user first. You will login into Emerald's application using your Primavera login cridentials.

 

Next you will see the complete list of Global Activity Codes. You need to check the codes you would like to roll down to the Project Level

 

The application will then perform the lookup at the code to projects assignments and create complete copies of the structures and assignments to activities at the projects that Global Activity code is assigned.

 

To verify our data we can see that two activity code that we selected are now at the project level and code values are properly assigned to the same activities. The same operations is done within the baselines (if any).

 

Next we will detele Serge-T1 Global Activity Code.

 

In this screenshot we see that Serge-T1 Global Activity Code no longes exists in the list and activity has only Project Activity Code Serge-T1 assigned to it.
