A series of one-hour webinars will be held over the course of three weeks, including "Daily Cost Control Using P6 and PCM" presented by Nicole Jardin, CEO at Emerald Associates.

Abstract:

When managing dozens of concurrent modular manufacturing projects, it is a challenge to ensure that expected margins are not in jeopardy. Project Managers need the ability to report where they are at with forecasted costs compared to the bid price on a daily basis to ensure profit erosion does not take place. To achieve daily cost control, integrating  and automating data flows from accounting, P6 and PCM is crucial. P6 is used to develop project cost and resource loaded schedule templates. PCM is used to control contracts/POs and changes in original scope to make sure the PMs are on top of deliverables and impacts to the project.

In this case study, we examine how PCM was used to kick-off the awarded project and create a matching P6 project that is loaded from Excel with estimates for costs and resources. The PM then refines the P6 project and pushes the original scope data into PCM, kicking off contracts for internally managed engineering and fabrication work and to bid packages for externally sourced  materials and services. This automation builds a one-to-one relationship between P6 tasks and PCM contract/PO line items allowing for ongoing scope management and daily progress reporting for both original and change order scope. With P6 and PCM in-synch, integrating accounting to pull in actual costs from vendor invoicing and internal timesheets, and some special rollup automations, gives the PM the inline tools to achieve daily cost management and margin controls needed in a fast paced manufacturing industry. Finally, Management reports produced using BI publisher from snapshotted data allows for portfolio management and fiscal year analysis to take place focusing on cashflow and profitability.
