Should I Install P6 PPM or P6 EPPM When Installing Primavera P6 on a Single Workstation?

Some technical considerations to help you decide which Primavera P6 version is right for you

This is a very common and puzzling question for someone who is installing P6 on a single workstation and is only going to have a single user – should I go with P6 Professional, also known as Primavera Project Portfolio Management (PPM), or P6 Enterprise, also known as Enterprise Project Portfolio Management (EPPM)?

Drawbacks of each approach

If installing P6 EPPM, these are the problems you will encounter:

  • You will need to install Weblogic and the P6 Web to gain access to administrative functions, such as managing your EPS and code structure. The P6 client doesn't show those options when connecting to an EPPM database – you also need the web components to run some jobs, such as summarizing projects.

If installing P6 PPM, these are the problems you might encounter:

  • P6 PPM doesn't include Primavera Team Member, Web Services, P6 Professional Cloud Connect or Enterprise Reports, and no customizable dashboards.
  • Some operations in P6 EPPM are delegated to the server and will be completed faster if the client is not in a location with good connectivity to the database server.

From a licensing perspective, we believe you are better off buying the EPPM license – it includes a PPM license and it only cost 10% more than the PPM license by itself. If you buy a PPM license and then later want to switch to EPPM, you have to buy a new license.

We recommend that clients always install P6 EPPM on an Oracle XE or Oracle Standard One database. In most cases, the P6 client will suffice to do all day-to-day operations in a PPM or EPPM installation.
